ABOUT NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

What does a Neuropsychologist do?

Clinical Neuropsychologists are trained to understand how the brain and brain disorders relate to behaviour and thinking skills. We have advanced skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of brain disorders across the lifespan, including developmental,  degenerative, acquired and psychiatric.  We are trained to assess how these disorders affect areas of cognition including attention, language, memory, problem-solving, decision-making, learning and literacy and numeracy skills.

OUR PROCESS

What To Expect At Your Visit

Assessment provides a detailed profile of a client’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and is recognised as a sensitive tool for the diagnosis of cognitive impairment, particularly in cases where changes are subtle. It can also be used to predict and enhance social, educational and vocational outcomes.

Assessment can range from brief consultations, with a simple report, to detailed comprehensive evaluations involving several hours of face-to-face contact. It involves a clinical interview and a range of individual tests, which can take up to three hours. The assessments are tailored to each individual and consist of question and answers, puzzles, pen and pencil tasks and tasks on the iPad. Parents/caregivers and teachers will be asked to complete questionnaires, which  provide additional information and are helpful when making a diagnosis and recommendations.

Consent will be requested to speak to other people involved in the client’s life, including family members, teachers and health professionals, in order to obtain a comprehensive history.

The family and/or relevant agencies are provided with a detailed report that includes a summary of the child or young person’s cognitive abilities and individually tailored recommendations.
